Bank Statement Requirements for Visit Visas: What Officers Look For

12 March 2026

Almost every visit visa application we handle involves the same question from clients: โ€œHow much money do I need in my account?โ€ The honest answer is that thereโ€™s rarely a fixed magic number โ€” what matters far more is what your bank statements actually show about your financial life.

Itโ€™s not about the balance on one day

A large lump sum deposited a week before you apply, sitting in an otherwise empty account, is one of the clearest red flags a visa officer sees. It suggests the money was borrowed or arranged specifically for the application, rather than reflecting your genuine financial situation. What officers actually want is 6 months of statements showing a stable, explainable pattern โ€” regular salary credits, normal household expenses, consistent savings behavior.

What a โ€œcleanโ€ statement looks like

  • Regular, identifiable income (salary, pension, business receipts, rental income)
  • Expenses that match a normal lifestyle โ€” no unexplained large withdrawals right before or after deposits
  • A balance thatโ€™s been reasonably consistent, not a single spike
  • No unexplained transfers from unclear sources

If you do have a large one-off transaction

Life happens โ€” a fixed deposit matures, you sell property, you receive a bonus or gift from a family member. None of this is a problem on its own, but it needs to be explained and, where possible, supported with a document (FD maturity certificate, sale deed, gift declaration). An unexplained transaction reads as suspicious; an explained one usually doesnโ€™t.

Different countries, similar principle

UK, Ireland, Australia, and Canada visa officers all apply broadly the same logic even though the specific rules differ โ€” UK and Ireland have no fixed minimum balance but expect a stable financial picture, while Canadaโ€™s Super Visa and some Australian streams have more defined income or fund thresholds tied to the sponsor. In every case, consistency and explainability matter more than a big number.

Whose bank statements should you submit?

If youโ€™re self-funding the trip, your own statements. If a sponsor abroad is funding it, theirs โ€” and ideally both, so the connection between sponsor and applicant is clear. We help you decide which combination makes the strongest case for your specific situation.
