Canada Visitor Visa & Super Visa — Guidance for Extended Family Visits

Visitor visa vs. Super Visa — which one do you need?

If the visit is a few weeks to a couple of months, a standard Temporary Resident (Visitor) visa is usually sufficient and simpler to document. If parents want to stay for several months to a year or more at a time, or plan repeat long visits over several years, the Super Visa — available specifically to parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens or permanent residents — is almost always the better route, because it allows stays of up to 5 years per visit on a visa valid up to 10 years. We assess this with you at the very first consultation, since it changes what documents are needed.

The Super Visa process, step by step

1. Eligibility check — Confirming the Canada-based child or grandchild is a citizen or permanent resident, and that their income meets IRCC’s minimum requirement for their family size.
2. Medical insurance — Arranging a private Canadian medical policy with at least CAD 100,000 coverage, valid for a minimum of 1 year, before the application is submitted.
3. Application and document bundle — Submitting the online application through the IRCC portal with the invitation letter, income proof, insurance proof, and the applicant’s own documents.
4. Biometrics — Fingerprints and photograph are given at the VFS Global centre in Kochi.
5. Decision — IRCC communicates the decision electronically; on approval, the visa is stamped in the passport.

What the Canada-based sponsor needs to prepare

A signed invitation letter, proof of PR/citizenship status, and income documents (Notice of Assessment, employment letter, or payslips) meeting the LICO threshold for their household size. We give you one simple checklist you can send them directly.

What applicants in Kerala need to provide

Passport, photograph, 6 months of bank statements, proof of ties to India, and — for the Super Visa specifically — the medical insurance certificate. Genuine, well-explained finances matter more than a large balance shown for the first time.
