Canada Visitor Visa vs Super Visa for Parents: Which One?
19 February 2026
This is one of the most common questions we get from families with children settled in Canada, and the right answer depends almost entirely on how long you want to stay โ not on which visa is โbetter.โ
The core difference
A standard Temporary Resident (Visitor) visa allows stays of up to 6 months per visit. The Super Visa โ available specifically to parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens or permanent residents โ allows stays of up to 5 years per visit, on a visa valid for up to 10 years.
When a standard Visitor visa is enough
If youโre planning a shorter trip โ a few weeks to a couple of months, for a specific occasion like a wedding or a holiday visit โ the standard Visitor visa is simpler to document and doesnโt require the additional insurance and income requirements the Super Visa involves.
When the Super Visa makes more sense
If you want to spend an extended period with your children โ around the birth of a grandchild, an entire winter, or repeat long visits over several years without reapplying each time โ the Super Visa is almost always the better choice. Itโs specifically designed for this situation.
What the Super Visa requires that a Visitor visa doesnโt
- Minimum sponsor income. Your Canada-based child must meet IRCCโs minimum income threshold (based on family size), proven through a Notice of Assessment or employment documents.
- Private medical insurance. A Canadian policy valid for at least 1 year, with a minimum of CAD 100,000 coverage โ this is mandatory, not optional, and needs to be arranged before the application is submitted.
Our honest recommendation
If thereโs any chance youโll want to stay more than a few months, or youโre likely to visit again within the next few years, the Super Visa is usually worth the extra documentation โ it saves you from reapplying for years afterward. We help you work out which one fits your specific plans during the first consultation, based on your childโs income and how long you actually intend to stay.
