If your son or daughter is working in the UK and you’re planning to visit them, the UK Standard Visitor visa is the route almost every family takes — and for parents applying for the first time, the process can feel overwhelming. This guide walks through it in plain language, based on the applications we handle most often.
What the visa actually allows
The Standard Visitor visa lets you visit family, tour the UK, or attend an event like a graduation or wedding, for up to 6 months per visit. It does not allow paid work. Visas are commonly granted for 6 months, 2 years, 5 years, or 10 years of validity — a longer validity means you can make repeat visits without reapplying each time, as long as no single stay exceeds 6 months.
The documents that actually matter
Two categories of documents carry the most weight with UKVI caseworkers:
Your ties to India. This is proof that you have a genuine reason to return — a pension, property, an ongoing job, or family responsibilities still based here. Retired parents should include pension statements and property documents; homemakers should include the household’s financial documents and a clear explanation of the family situation in India.
Your finances. Six months of clean, explainable bank statements matter far more than a single large deposit made right before applying. If there’s a large or unusual transaction, be ready to explain it in your cover letter — caseworkers notice unexplained movements.
What your son or daughter in the UK needs to send you
Don’t leave this until the last minute — it takes time to gather. They’ll need to send: a signed invitation letter explaining the visit, a copy of their passport bio page and current UK visa, BRP, or proof of settled status, proof of their UK address, and — if they’re funding the trip — 6 months of their own bank statements or payslips.
The VFS Kochi appointment
Once your online application is submitted, you’ll book a biometrics appointment at the VFS Global centre in Kochi, where your fingerprints and photograph are taken. Bring your appointment confirmation and passport. After this, UKVI processes the decision — the standard target is around 15 working days for straightforward cases, though it can extend to 3–6 weeks.
The most common mistake we see
Families often assume more documents automatically means a stronger application. What actually matters is consistency — the dates, relationships, and figures across your bank statements, invitation letter, and cover letter should all tell the same clear story. A thin file that’s internally consistent beats a thick file with contradictions almost every time.
